Durham Castle dates from the 11th century and is part of a World Heritage Site and has an excellent central location adjacent to Durham Cathedral in the centre of the city. The Castle is one of the colleges of Durham University and offers can offer accommodation during University vacations. A wide variety of comfortable bedrooms is available, ranging from standard rooms with shared facilities to magnificent state rooms, which are available throughout the yearA full English breakfast is included and will be served of our medieval Great Hall. Directions

WalkingCyclingOnce you have arrived in Durham City, it is easy to locate and reach Durham Castle. We are approximately 15 minutes' walk from the railway station; this will take you through the city centre and up towards our location on Palace Green where the Cathedral is also located. Whilst there are no designated cycle lanes through town, cycling is permitted and there are bike storage facilities once you get to University College. See the Durham University map and select 'University College' from the drop down list.By CarFrom the South: drive north on the A1(M) and exit at Junction 62. Take the A690 signposted for Durham. Exit the motorway and follow the sign marked Durham City and Consett (this is a dual carriageway). After three miles, at the first roundabout, take the second main exit which crosses under a pedestrian footbridge and gives, immediately in front of you, a magnificent view of the Cathedral, Castle and City. The road is downhill and at the bottom is another roundabout. Take the second exit left and travel up the slip road. At the top, turn left into the Market Place (road is signposted Access Only). Travel forward at the traffic lights into North Bailey. The road is narrow and uphill. You will pass several small shops and restaurants. Take the cobbled road on the right - it banks sharply upwards towards Palace Green. Turn right at the top and then right again into University College. Please check in at the Porters' Lodge at the Main Gate.From the North: drive south on the A1(M) and exit at Junction 62. Take the A690 signposted for Durham and Consett. Turn right at the roundabout and then follow directions as above.Arrival and car parking facilitiesThe Lindisfarne Gospels will be on display in the Palace Green Library in the Summer months of 2013. Due to the high volume of expected vistors there will be no parking facilities around Palace Green or the Castle courtyard over this periodVisitors and guests with mobility problems are advised to contact us well in advance so that we can provide the best advice and assistance.The entrance to the Castle (the Barbican) is a single track cobbled road with a restricted entrance through the Gatehouse to the Courtyard. The Barbican is approximately 4.2 metres wide and the Gatehouse 2.5 metres wide by 2.6 metres high.
